The science and practice of river restoration has been building momentum and scale in the Pacific Northwest. Collectively, we have learned better ways to design and construct projects, shifting emphasis from river stability to river processes and dynamic change.
In our work to restore rivers and floodplains, W2r is taking an active role in advancing conversations and practices in floodplain science and restoration design. In addition to our own project experience, we are working in various capacities to see novel design approaches get permitted and implemented.
W2r hosts webinars and participates in agency site tours to provide education on Stage 0 project actions and clarify methods used. Our staff also present at conferences and regularly teach courses on the use of BDAs and Stage 0-targeted approaches.
It is from the spectrum of design-permitting-monitoring-construction-teaching experience that we've acquired a nuanced understanding of Stage 8/0 design aspects, and can successfully apply them to specific situations. Our work on Desolation Creek, which was the first project to receive buy-in from BPA on a Stage 0 approach, demonstrates this as does our work on Big Creek, the Tucannon River, the Columbia River and elsewhere.
